TOO MUCH SUGAR CAN LEAD TO WEIGHT GAIN AND TOOTH DECAY
"Free sugars" are the kind of sugar that most people and kids consume in excess.
This means:
- Any added sugars to food or beverages. These include the sugars found in chocolate, morning cereals, flavoured yoghurt, and fizzy drinks. These sugars could be added by the consumer, a chef, or another food producer.
- Sugars found in fruit juices, vegetable juices, smoothies, unsweetened syrups (such as maple and golden), nectars and honey. These foods include naturally occurring sugars, which nonetheless count as free sugars.
- Sugar found naturally in milk, fruit and vegetables does not count as free sugars.
